"When my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, aged 59, we were all in deep shock and one of my first reactions was “what is ovarian cancer?”  I was an adult woman and I had never heard of it.  My mother (and I) were unaware that the symptoms she had been experiencing were typical of the disease, yet they were ignored and misdiagnosed for over three years.  Sadly, when it was discovered it was advanced and after an 8 year battle she passed away.
The Royal Marsden were outstanding throughout her treatment, however, at the time it was quite standardised for ovarian cancer and it was gruelling.  Gynaecological cancer research at the Royal Marsden now shows a promising move towards more personalised treatments and other advancements which set to improve survival rates and quality of life for women with gynaecological cancers.

But raising funds for research alone is not enough, the Lady Garden Foundation is equally as focused on raising awareness.  My mother’s story was not an unusual one, quite the contrary.  Women of all ages should be fully aware of gynaecological cancers and most importantly their typical symptoms which are often our only detection.  We aim to lift taboo’s so women feel comfortable enough to have discussions about their bodies without embarrassment.  We want women to understand their bodies and recognise any unusual signs in the hope that problems can be caught earlier and chances of survival improved.

Losing my mother was utterly heartbreaking and preventable.  Every woman is someone’s mother, daughter, wife, sister, friend."
